You misunderstand, the drums were something I've been wanting to see emulated for several years and i'm glad it's happened, but it needs work and compared to how those games sounded previously in Mame (crisp & clear but no analog drums emulated yet), the sound overall (AY-3-8910A, MSM5205, etc.) sounds muffled and a bit scratchy ever since emulation of the drums started. Compare it to this PCB recording Spelunker, the Lode Runner sequels and the possibly unreleased Horizion also suffer from this.

Yes, compared to the recordings there I'd say there is still work to be done then, although overall I still prefer the current emulation with the slightly scratchy drums than when they were missing entirely. Muffled sound seems to happen quite a lot with the discrete sound stuff in MAME, although in a lot of cases recordings we've been given from hardware also seem rather muffled. Unfortunately it's also a field well outside of my understanding, which is why progress in such areas seem to be slow, only one or two people actually seem involved in it, and it's possible they've also hit their limit of understanding and don't know why it doesn't sound cleaner.
