One of the most useful things you can do to build knowledge into a model is to add relations between dimensions. By using formulas to relate a dimension to other dimensions, you can reduce the amount of editing that a part will need, and also assure that your design intent will be preserved.

With Cimatron E12, the ability to add relations is now available while in Sketch Mode, making it easy to quickly relate features to each other. The driving dimensions can also be tagged as leading dimensions and linked to the main setup table, all without leaving the sketch. In Cimatron E12 the Solid / New / Stock function replaces older utilities that were used to create a box around a part and measure its size. Within the function, several on-screen options allow you to add extra stock to the part or round the stock size to a nominal number. When the stock is saved as a solid box, it gets placed on an automatic set and can be marked as a cutting object. If you prefer not to create the actual stock geometry, the function would still place the overall part dimensions into the stock size attribute, where it can be used for the Bill of Materials.

Opening a new NC file in E12 will look slightly different because of the General NC preference to Auto-load an NC template. The default template in E12 includes a new feature called NC Setup, providing a convenient way to predefine multiple project-related options in a single place. You can set the part material, which in turn can now be used to set different machining parameters in the cutter definition. You can also set the NC report, post processor, and even machine simulator that will be used. NC Setup can also include the initial stock and part statements for the project. While Auto-load and NC Setup make for a powerful combination, each one of these features can be used independent of the other.

Even if you turn off the preference to Auto-load a template, manually defining an NC Setup provides a good way to make sure that every NC file is started in a consistent fashion. Conversely, you may prefer to use the template Auto-load, but with a template of your own that does not include a predefined NC Setup.
